Diana Fritillary (male)

Diana Fritillary (male)

Did you know Arkansas has an Official State Butterfly? If you did, move to the head of the class – I just found out yesterday when I went to look this one up…  It’s a Diana Fritillary, and this one is a male.  (The females are black and various shades of iridescent blue.)

I’d like to note that this shot was taken on Friendship Trail, behind the Ouachita National Forest Jessieville Visitor’s Center (map below).  Less than a mile north of the school in Jessieville, there is a fully-accessible paved trail through nice wooded areas to a small pond, fishing dock, and covered pavillion/picnic area.  The trails are relaxing with an abundance of benches to sit on and watch the wildflowers and wildlife – both of which were on full display on the first day of June, 2011…
