Ancient Seabed – Recent Falls

Much of Arkansas’s strata is comprised of layers of sandstone that was once ancient seabeds – now hardened into stone and tossed at crazy angles due to mountain-building processes (orogeny). The weathered formations in the foreground of this photo show some of that – while the dam in the background is of much more recent vintage.

Taken at Camp Charlton Recreation Area in the Ouachita Mountains.
