Bear Cave Panorama 11-05-08

“Bear Cave” at Petit Jean State Park in central Arkansas is not exactly a cave – or at least not a single one – and in fact it’s not easy to describe the place, but try this:  Imagine a chunk of rock the size of a big office building several stories tall and taking up a whole block.  Then imagine this half-buried in the side of a bluff, and cut-through with thousands of years of erosion into something like a block of lithic Swiss-cheese.  You can walk over it, under it, through it, and all around it – though some of the passages are dead-ends and you should really be careful exploring this area.  (Climbing and rappelling is not allowed.)  Kids really trip-out on the place, but keep a tight reign on them…
