Modern Love in the Western World

Modern Love in the Western World

For my viewers: A kitschy hand-made Valentine’s Day card just for you… (Click to view full-size)

The comic-book panel comes from Beware #10 (July 1954 – Trojan Magazines), and for some reason that single-panel cracked me up bad!

The sheer naïveté of these old things is just priceless, and many of them have expired copyrights and are now in the public domain. A good place to get your fill is The Digital Comic Museum, but don’t say I didn’t warn you – these things are worse than potato chips! (And about as healthy.)

Beware #10 featured cover art by Frank Frazetta and Sid Check … though I’m afraid Bob and Linda met an unfortunate end in their story. (And he didn’t get a job – even with those pants.)

I also made use of the Hand-Drawn Heart Brushes by This ‘n That.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Modern Lovers!

Abandoned Shangri-La

Abandoned Shangri-La #1

Abandoned Shangri-La #2

A double-feature today: Two shots of an old church or school (or both) near the shores of Lake Ouachita in the Tompkin’s Bend / Shangri-La area. You may remember that Shangri-La was a fictitious place in the novel Lost Horizon - which I read as a kid, and was then delighted to learn there was a place on Lake Ouachita with the same name.

In the story, those who lived in Shangri-La never grew old … but since this is actually down the road from there, I guess the magic doesn’t reach that far.

Petit Jean réside dans sa tombe

Petit Jean réside dans sa tombe

The purported grave of “Little John” – the possible namesake of Petit Jean Mountain. If you don’t know the tearful (and somewhat ridiculous) story of the young lovers Adrienne Dumont and Chavet, here is one of the many places you can read a summarized version on the ‘net.

Personally, I’ll tell you that this whole story is as fictitious as the one told in Gone with the Wind was – and I do not believe this is an actual grave at all. See this site for why …
