I love software! I've been testing, using and collecting it for almost a quarter-century - back to the days when some of my BASIC programs were stored on cassette tapes - and I doubt I'll ever stop! I can't resist a tempting new title, and I find myself hunting down some oddball tool or utility several times a week. I've got a bit of a reputation for this and am often asked what I would recommend for various tasks - and I'll be more than happy to tell you. Keep in mind that I'm a big fan of Open Source and otherwise FREE software - Some of the best programs out there won't cost you a cent! Affixa
Man, I've been looking for an app that will do this for YEARS! It's been a while since I used a dedicated mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird, since I mostly just use a single Gmail account for almost everything these days. The trouble comes when you click on an email link on a web page, or from a PDF or other document ... Windows will try to use whatever it's been told the default email client is (or Outlook Express if you haven't configured a different one). But that's not what I want - I want to use Gmail (which does have an "offline" gizmo in developement, but not finished yet.)
If I remember correctly the Yahoo! Toolbar will give you the option of making your Yahoo! email account the Windows default - but I also remember problems trying to get it to give up this behavior too! (It also requited installing the Yahoo! Toolbar, which I'm not crazy about...) Affixa is a free program which will allow you to use either Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, or your default local client (Outlook, for example) as the application that will launch when you click on an email link.
With this free version, you can set up ONE of these accounts to be the default - with the registered version (which cost "2-pounds/year", if I'm reading it right ... or maybe that's Euros now - beats me) you can set up all of your email accounts and programs and choose which to use when you click on an email link.
Until Google gives me some better toys, this will do...

If you want to experience viewing pages and galleries full of images on the Internet (including my own Photo & Art Albums) in a completely cool "Infinite Interactive 3D Wall" like something from Minority Report - then you have GOT to download CoolIris - a free whiz-bang browser plug-in that will WOW you and everyone you show it to!

I've found a new SIN, and of course this one is highly-addictive and will eat up all your time. Fortunately it's a computer game, which may make it easier on those attempting to perform an intervention... Sins of a Solar Empire (or just “SINS” to it’s legions of fans) is a title I first saw on the shelves about a year ago and it looked intriguing, but more like one of those highly-involved "Expand and Conquer" games - and I was looking for a "space-shooter", for lack of a better term. I had liked games like Descent and some of the Star Wars titles where you actually fly the spaceships around in first-person (and preferably of the heavily-armed, hot-rod variety.) I finally decided to give it a try though, and I was right - it is one of those involved expand-your-empire games ... but it also just happens to be really, really GREAT! |

Most of you know that you should keep your hard drives "defragmented" (and some of you actually do it). Windows has always included a "defragger" (usually co-opted from other sources), and most people seldom worry about it beyond that - though of course the ones who do use it will often complain about how long it takes... (If you're in the dark about what "disc fragmentation" is, go read the article here.) Of course there are hard-core people who defrag their drives obsessively, and they deserve to pay top $$$ for a great program like Diskeeper, but for the rest of us who just want something faster and better than the lightweight defragger Windows offers - here it is : SmartDefrag! It's FREE FOREVER - or at least that's the claim they make. (Forever? ... is that a legal definition of time?) But it would just be a waste of your fragmented disc space if it wasn't faster than the one you've got, and rest assured that it IS! In fact, I'd say this thing can give Diskeeper a run for it's money ... and unless you need corporate-server-level defragging, then SmartDefrag would win, not least of all because it's free! It will analyze, defrag, optimize, and "deep-optimize" any drive in record time, and keep it that way with auto-scheduling and other features if you want it too. Highly recommended! No, it’s not a toilet or some big-assed Indonesian lizard. It was the free firewall that I recommended to use in conjunction with AVG’s free anti-virus software – the same combo I was using up until a few months ago… Then I discovered when overhauling one of my PCs that COMODO is now an full-function AV-Scanner and Firewall in one, and after using it for a while, I’m happy to recommend it as a great, FREE alternative to the overblown (and overpriced) programs like Norton that can really do no better… |
