Stroll in the Swamp

Stroll in the Swamp

I hope to get a chance to revisit this area soon – so I was revisiting some photos I took of it back in April of 2009.  It’s the Louisiana Purchase State Park at the junction of Lee, Monroe and Phillips counties, and despite being a “State Park”, there’s not much to it except a headstone-like granite monument in the middle of a swamp and a boardwalk to it – so don’t expect any other amenities!  But the boardwalk itself is magnificent!  It zig-zags through the swamp with built-in benches and wide areas where you can just sit and watch and listen – and allows you access to this area where you’d otherwise need hip-waders!  This is a great place to observe wildlife, but I’d recommend that you go as early as possible; wear bug-repellent in season; and remember there are no restrooms, water fountains, or snack machines here!  Plus you have to find it, and it’s a bit off the beaten path … see the map below.

Update!: I visited on May 11th and they seem to have added a couple of pit toilets next to the parking area.  They were about half-flooded, but that’s not surprising considering that the swamp was the highest I’d seen it from all the recent flooding…

Gorge Stormwater – April 2011

Gorge Stormwater - April 27 2011 -1

Yesterday’s post showed the trail down into the Gorge in Hot Springs National Park, taken just before a two-day round of severe weather hit the area.  Today you can see the result of all that rain on the creek that formed the Gorge (after it’s gone down a bit … I’ve seen it a lot higher than this!)  See another angle below…
