A rocky bend in the trail just above Gulpha Gorge Campground in Hot Springs National Park. These old lichen-covered boulders are small in comparison to the cliff-like stone masses rising behind them at this bend. The trail you see off to the right comes up from the Gorge, and the man-made steps help you up and around this formation on the way to the top of North or Hot Springs Mountains.
Yes, this plant is lying to you. It’s not really Garlic – it’s Allium neapolitanum (or a variation). You can find it in Springtime in the Southern U.S.
The early French explorers in this region thought this mountain looked like a barn – so they named it “Barn”, and in French you spell that “Magazine“. (That’s right – you may load your gun by putting bullets in the barn, or if you want to know what Lindsey Lohan is up to, look in the appropriate barn!)
In this shot you can see the awesome lodge on top of the mountain – and if you squint, maybe some of the cabins surrounding it (click for full-size). I love the way the lodge seems to blend-in with the rocky ledges and benches along the top of the mountain, almost like it was a natural part of the landscape. (F.L. Wright would have been proud!) This view is from the edge of Blue Mountain Lake – which is the one you can see looking south from Mt. Magazine, as in this shot.
A little half-grown grasshopper landed on this Birdsfoot Violet as I photographed it while hiking on the side of North Mountain – Hot Springs, Arkansas.
