Modern Love in the Western World

Modern Love in the Western World

For my viewers: A kitschy hand-made Valentine’s Day card just for you… (Click to view full-size)

The comic-book panel comes from Beware #10 (July 1954 – Trojan Magazines), and for some reason that single-panel cracked me up bad!

The sheer naïveté of these old things is just priceless, and many of them have expired copyrights and are now in the public domain. A good place to get your fill is The Digital Comic Museum, but don’t say I didn’t warn you – these things are worse than potato chips! (And about as healthy.)

Beware #10 featured cover art by Frank Frazetta and Sid Check … though I’m afraid Bob and Linda met an unfortunate end in their story. (And he didn’t get a job – even with those pants.)

I also made use of the Hand-Drawn Heart Brushes by This ‘n That.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Modern Lovers!

Happy New Year – 2012!

“Party like it’s 1929!”

I normally do not post images that are not my own, but I couldn’t resist using this photo for my New Year’s post. It was taken by the famous photographer and explorer Frank Hurley, and this photo is “Mawson and men at Christmas dinner with menu and balloons, on board the S.Y. Discovery, 1930

Hurley took some of the most tremendous photos I’ve ever seen, particularly of the ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. If you’re interested, look for the book South with Endurance.

You can see an archive of Hurley’s photos here.

Here’s wishing everyone a Happy 2012 – however long your count is!

Trapped in the Woods

Trapped in the Woods

An unusual self-portrait – but where’s the rest of me? In this case, the glass in the window of this old camper in the woods is covered in a reflective mylar film…
