Happy New Year – 2012!

“Party like it’s 1929!”

I normally do not post images that are not my own, but I couldn’t resist using this photo for my New Year’s post. It was taken by the famous photographer and explorer Frank Hurley, and this photo is “Mawson and men at Christmas dinner with menu and balloons, on board the S.Y. Discovery, 1930”

Hurley took some of the most tremendous photos I’ve ever seen, particularly of the ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. If you’re interested, look for the book South with Endurance.

“Pillow Fight”

A few more shots from the Legends Balloon Rally in Hot Springs, Arkansas – September 23rd & 24th, 2011. I love the way tight-cropping (mostly done in the camera) reduces these balloons to just color, form, and geometry … but you still know what they are.
