Abandoned Shangri-La

Abandoned Shangri-La #1

Abandoned Shangri-La #2

A double-feature today: Two shots of an old church or school (or both) near the shores of Lake Ouachita in the Tompkin’s Bend / Shangri-La area. You may remember that Shangri-La was a fictitious place in the novel Lost Horizon - which I read as a kid, and was then delighted to learn there was a place on Lake Ouachita with the same name.

In the story, those who lived in Shangri-La never grew old … but since this is actually down the road from there, I guess the magic doesn’t reach that far.

Forgotten in Scott

Forgotten in Scott (BW)

An old cotton depot in Scott, Arkansas – for lack of a better term. This building is located next to train tracks and would have stored bailed cotton waiting to be shipped out. There’s a nice museum of cotton-boom era relics and the related history in the little town of Scott – but the town is practically a museum itself with all these old cotton gins and associated buildings. See a color version and a map of Scott below…
