Onyx Landmark Missionary Baptist Church

Onyx, Arkansas is at the junction of Hwys 27 & 314. Most of my maps show a “Ballew Family Cemetery” near this location, but the church you see above is not named on a single one of them. It took me a while to discover this is the Onyx Landmark Missionary Baptist Church – and that’s part of the Fourche La Fave River running in front of it. That low-water bridge is the only access to the church, so when the river is up and running high … you have to pray extra hard. Map below –

Historic Hollis Bridge

Historic Hollis Bridge

It’s funny, I’ve been over this bridge countless times in my life and I’ve never really thought of it as “historic”, but I guess anything that old would be – and thinking of how long I’ve been crossing it, I suppose I could consider myself historic too. But it’s still a bit older than me – built in 1933, it crosses the South Fourche La Fave River at the town of Hollis, Arkansas. Consider this a companion piece to “Hollis’s Fishing Spot” in which you can see this bridge, but back in the distance. You still can’t see much of it here – but she’s shy in Spring and Summer…
